Barbershop paradox: The supposition that if one of two simultaneous assumptions leads to a contradiction, the other assumption is also disproved. Known for being an innovative research and development company, Paradox is a recognized worldwide force in the security industry. A paradox is a figure of speech in which a statement appears to contradict itself. Adjective: paradoxical. In everyday communication, notes H.F. Platt, paradox "is.
Define paradox: something (such as a situation) that is made up of two opposite things and that seems impossible but is — paradox in a sentence. Examples and Definition of Paradox. Paradox Definition. The term Paradox is from the Greek word “paradoxon” that means contrary to expectations, existing belief or perceived opinion. It is a statement that appears to be self- contradictory or silly but may include a latent truth. It is also used to illustrate an opinion or statement contrary to accepted traditional ideas. A paradox is often used to make a reader think over an idea in innovative way. Examples of Paradox. Your enemy’s friend is your enemy. I am nobody.“What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young.” – George Bernard Shaw. Wise fool. Truth is honey which is bitter.“I can resist anything but temptation.” – Oscar Wilde. From the above examples of paradox, we can say that paradox creates a humorous effect on the readers because of its ridiculousness. Paradox Examples in Literature. In literature, paradox is not just a clever or comical statement or use of words. Paradox has serious implication because it makes statements that often summarize the major themes of the work they are used in. Let us analyze some paradox examples from some famous literary works: Example #1. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one part of the cardinal rule is the statement,“All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. This statement seems to not make any sense. However, on closer examination, it gets clear that Orwell points out a political truth. The government in the novel claims that everyone is equal but it has never treated everyone equally. It is the concept of equality stated in this paradox that is opposite to the common belief of equality. Example #2. In the famous play of Shakespeare, Hamlet, the protagonist Hamlet says,“I must be cruel to be kind.”This announcement does not seem to make sense. How can an individual treat others kindly even when he is cruel? However, Hamlet is talking about his mother, and how he intends to kill Claudius to avenge his father’s death. This act of Hamlet will be a tragedy for his mother who is married to Claudius. Hamlet does not want his mother to be the beloved of his father’s murderer any longer, and so he thinks that the murder will be good for his mother. Example #3. From Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”: The earth that’s nature’s mother is her tomb; What is her burying grave, that is Rainbow in her womb; The contradictory ideas of the earth being the birthplace and a graveyard make these lines paradoxical. Example #4. In his short lyric “My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold”, William Wordsworth remembers the joys of his past and says: “Child is father of the man”This statement has seemingly incorrect proposition but when we look deep into its meaning, we see the truth. The poet is saying that the childhood experiences become the basis for all adult occurrences. The childhood of a person shapes his life and consequently “fathers” or creates the grown- up adult. So, “Child is father of the man.”Function of Paradox. The above reading may bring out the question, “Why is paradox used when a message can be conveyed in a straightforward and simple manner?” The answer lies in the nature and purpose of literature. One function of literature is to make the readers enjoy reading. Readers enjoy more when they extract the hidden meanings out of the writing rather than something presented to them in an uncomplicated manner. Thus, the chief purpose of a paradox is to give pleasure. In poetry, the use of paradox is not confined to mere wit and pleasure; rather, it becomes an integral part of poetic diction. Poets usually make use of a paradox to create a remarkable thought or image out of words. Some types of paradox in poetry are meant to communicate a tone of irony to its readers as well as lead their thoughts to the immediate subject. Paradox in most poems normally strives to create feelings of intrigue and interest in readers’ minds to make them think deeper and harder to enjoy the real message of the poem.

BULLETPROOF jackets, yacht sails and tow lines are made of fabrics and ropes designed to withstand enormous force. Those fabrics and ropes are, in turn, woven or twisted from fibres made of artificial polymers, such as polyethylene, specially prepared in ways that make them strong. Unfortunately, this preparation uses inflammable and toxic solvents. That makes it hazardous for workers and potentially bad for the environment. But this may change if a team of materials scientists led by Paul Smith and Theo Tervoort at ETH Zurich has its way. As they write in Macromolecules, Dr Smith and Dr Tervoort have been trying to make strong polymer fibres using less- nasty solvents. Directed by Laurie Masi. With Germaine Peters, Jamar Johnson, Jay Garland, Ahmad Newman. Think "I tried" meets "waist deep" Isis On Fire, LLC presents a drama film. On Friday night, Fox News aired a one-hour special on Not only have they succeeded, their virtue has been rewarded by the discovery that this approach creates even stronger materials than the old and noxious one. Polymers are long, chainlike molecules. Each link in the chain is either an identical chemical unit (as in the case of polyethylene) or one of a small set of such units (as in the case of nylon, which has two sorts of link). Such chains tend to intertwine in a disorderly fashion when part of a solid. Strength, however, requires order. To make a strong material the individual molecules should, as far as possible, be stretched out in parallel with one another, thus forming an elongated crystal, and the crystals should then be similarly aligned in a fibre as that fibre is being drawn. If fibres are drawn directly from liquid polymers, they will solidify in a disorderly way. In a solution, though, the molecular chains can slip past each other, straightening themselves out and aligning themselves in the same direction, thus forming crystals. Then, when a thread is drawn, these crystals will line up along its axis. The established method of doing all this is to use something good at dissolving the polymers in question—typically, a type of chemical known as a non- polar organic solvent. Tangled Web Quote
Tangled Web SpartanburgThese substances are generally hydrocarbons of the sort petrol is made of. They are notoriously dangerous and bad for the environment. Dr Smith and Dr Tervoort, however, wondered if it might be possible to coax polymer molecules into aligning themselves using more benign materials, such as peanut oil and even extra- virgin olive oil. These materials do not dissolve plastics like polyethylene at room temperature. If they did, such plastics could not be used as containers for cooking oils, or in many other familiar ways. But the researchers did not work at room temperature. By heating mixtures of polyethylene and their chosen solvents to 2. The results astonished them. They had hoped the new fibres might be as good as decalin- made ones. In fact, they were better. Tensile strength is measured in pascals. High- quality steel has a strength of one gigapascal (GPa). The two researchers’ decalin- made fibres had a strength of about 2. GPa. The best of those made using peanut oil and olive oil came in at 4. GPa. But something about the interaction between polyethylene molecules and the new solvents seems to encourage the formation of more perfect crystals than those that emerge from a decalin solution. If this applies to other polymers, and the process can be scaled up, Dr Smith and Dr Tervoort will have created a process for making strong fibres that is not only greener, but more effective. A skilled horseman and marksman, he brings down the elk swiftly but is snubbed at the after- hunt party. A year later, Fawcett is sent to London to meet with officials of the Royal Geographical Society. The governments of Bolivia and Brazil are nearly at war over the location of their mutual boundary, and have asked the British government to survey it. Fawcett agrees to lead the survey party to restore his family's good name. On the ship to Brazil, Fawcett meets Corporal Henry Costin, who has knowledge of the Amazon rainforest. At a large rubber plantation in the jungle owned by the Portuguese nobleman Baron de Gondoriz, the two meet Corporal Arthur Manley, who tells them that the British government advises against further exploration. Fawcett, with several guides and the Amazonian scout Tadjui, complete the mission. Tadjui tells Fawcett stories about a city in the jungle covered in gold and full of people. Fawcett dismisses such stories as insane ravings, but discovers highly advanced broken pottery and some small stone statues in the jungle that convince him Tadjui's story was true. Fawcett is praised after his return to England, where his wife, Nina, has given birth to their second son. In the Trinity College Library, Nina discovers a conquistador text which tells of a city deep in the Amazon jungle. Fawcett meets the renowned biologist James Murray, who agrees to back Fawcett's expedition to the Amazon to find what Fawcett calls . Fawcett attempts to convince the members of the RGS to back the expedition, but is publicly ridiculed. Nevertheless, the RGS backs the expedition to further exploration of the Amazon basin. Murray is unused to the rigors of the deep jungle, and slows the party down significantly. The Fawcett group is attacked while traveling along the river. The Lost City of Z is the name given by Col. Murray suffers a severe knee injury which becomes infected, and he begins to go mad. Fawcett sends him off with a native guide and the group's last pack animal to find aid. Fawcett's team completes their survey, but are unable to find the lost city. Murray survives, and accuses Fawcett in front of the RGS trustees of abandoning him in the jungle. Fawcett resigns from the society rather than apologize. World War I breaks out in Europe, and Fawcett goes to France to fight. In the Battle of the Somme, Manley dies in the trenches, and Fawcett is temporarily blinded during a chlorine gas attack. Jack, Fawcett's eldest son who had long accused Fawcett of abandoning the family, reconciles with his father in the hospital. In 1. 92. 3, Fawcett is living in obscurity in England. American interest in exploring the Amazon has reached a fever pitch, primarily due to Fawcett's stories of the lost city. The RGS co- funds the expedition at the last moment as a matter of British pride. Prior to departing, Fawcett hands Sir John Scott Keltie, a member of the RGS, a compass informing him that should he find the lost city, he will send the compass back. Percy and Jack intend to go alone this time, traveling as light as they can for up to three years in order to find Z. Fawcett invites Costin along, but he declines. Percy and Jack are attacked by natives and escape—only to run into an ambush by a second group of Amazonians. The second tribe declares that the spirits of the Fawcetts . Percy and Jack are drugged during a ceremony and carried away. Years later, Nina Fawcett meets with Keltie, now the head of the RGS, claiming she has heard that Percy and Jack are alive and living with some tribespeople. The RGS, having sent more than a hundred people to search for Fawcett over the last several years, declines to send another expedition. Keltie advises Nina to come to terms with her husband's death, but she refuses. She shows Keltie a package, and on opening it, it contains the compass Fawcett had promised to send back if he found the city. Production. Based on his previous films, Gray was not initially sure why Plan B sent him the book. I didn’t know what it was and I hadn’t heard of the story at all. It takes place outside of New York, and it’s a period piece in the United Kingdom and the jungle. So I had no idea why the people at Plan B decided to send me this book, because nothing in my prior work had shown that I could do anything like this. Maybe it was an act of madness on their part. And you want to get it right. It's a very, very scary proposition to go into the jungle and all that. But at the same time it's terrific. It's why you make movies.
